TDK’s Kustom Service Fuel Trailer.

We had an aviation company come to us interested in getting a Kustom Service/Fuel Trailer Built. They wanted a bumper-pull trailer that had Tool Boxes and a Fuel Tank integrated into it. We took the project head on and designed and built the trailer you see here. Coming in at just under 21 feet long, this trailer features a front Tool Box, Stainless Fuel Tank, Rear Pump Box, and a stack of accessories and mounts to go along with it.

The Frame. Constructed from 2” x 6” x 3/16” Rectangle Tubing with CNC cut and bent 3/16” Steel Plate. The 2” x 6” rectangle makes up the perimeter of the frame while all of the crossmembers are made from the cut and bent 3/16” plate which is then fully mig welded together. The construction of this frame is exceptionally strong and built to last.

  • 2” x 6” x 3/16” Rectangle Tubing and 3/16” Steel Plate construction.
  • Mounting Points for the Boxes and Fuel Tank.
  • Fabricated Fenders w/ built in steps welded directly to the frame.

The Front Box. The front box is constructed of 12ga steel plate that is CNC cut, bent, and then mig welded and metal finished. This box features 3 doors on the driver side and 1 on the passenger side. The doors are constructed of 14ga steel plate and are all assisted with a nitrogen shock.  Inside the box; the roof and walls have 14ga steel bracing that is also cut and bent, then plug welded in place. This gives the entire box great structure and rigidity. Not only do these braces give the box the structure it needs, but they also act as an integrated mounting system due to the slotted keyways we have cut into the braces. The slotted keyways allow 5/16” carriage bolts to be used in mounting different brackets to the interior of the box. The “Jack Box” is a small area in the very front of the Box that houses the Hydraulic Trailer Jack and all of the electrical components. The “Jack Box” is closed off with a door that has two latches holding it in place, allowing it to be fully removed and out of your way while working. The interior of the front box is set up with multiple accessories including; A Mount for Spare Tires, Tool Box Mount, Air Compressor Mount (w/ drain lines out the bottom of the box), Hose Reel Mount, and a shelf system that allows quick adjustability and removal of the shelves.

  • 12ga and 14ga steel construction.
  • 3 Doors on Driver Side (Nitrogen Shock Assisted)
  • 1 Door on Passenger Side (Nitrogen Shock Assisted
  • “Jack Box” for hydraulic Jack and electrical
  • Shelving wall with adjustable/removable shelves

The Fuel Tank. The fuel tank is a unique item in itself, being that it is fully constructed of ⅛” Stainless Steel. This tank holds roughly 930 gallons of fuel and is equipped with; A sumped drain in the bottom of the tank (the drain valve is accessible by a fabricated arm ran to the rear of the trailer), A man hole cover with built in pressure relief valve, and all necessary plumbing and valves to hook up the transfer pump in the rear box. The tank can also be made out of standard steel plate if preferred.

  • ⅛” Stainless Steel Construction
  • Man Hole Cover w/ Pressure Relief Valve
  • Sumped Drain Valve (actuated by fabricated arm ran to the rear of the trailer)
  • All Necessary Plumbing and Fittings

The Rear Box. The rear box is what we consider to be the “Pump Box.” This Box has two doors that swing open to give you plenty of space to access the Transfer pump, Hose Reel, Static Ground Cable Reel, and Fuel Supply Valve.

  • 12ga Steel construction w/ 14ga Steel doors
  • Transfer Pump Mount
  • Hose Reel Mount
  • Static Ground Cable Reel Mount
  • Fuel Supply Valve (actuated by arm that runs to the outside of the box)
  • Baja Designs Dome Lights (Interior)
  • Baja Designs Squadron Flush Mount Light (Exterior)
  • Auxiliary Light Plug for additional lighting options

Lighting. The Trailer itself is equipped with all necessary running lights, and brake/tail lights. The front box has 3 Baja Designs Dome Lights built in to illuminate the whole box. The rear box is also equipped with 2 of the same dome lights to supply more than enough light. For exterior lighting, the driver-side of the front and rear boxes have 1 (2 total) Baja Designs Squadron Flush mounted Work light which lights up the exterior working area. If that isn’t quite enough, we have an auxiliary plug in the rear box where another light can be plugged in and set up wherever the user finds necessary.

Other Items. While we were just talking about lighting, how do you turn everything on? We have a Kustom switch panel built into the front wall of the front box. This switch panel is responsible for all of the light switches. The Master Switch and Hydraulic Jack Switch are mounted on this wall as well. Being that this trailer was built for an aviation company, a mount for an airplane towbar was needed as well. We made a simple yet effective roof mount for this that is accessible by the built in steps on the fenders. Right above the fuel tank is our cargo rack that bolts between the front and rear box.  Another cool addition is the roof mounted solar panel that is wired in so it will trickle charge the battery while sitting outside. What if you’re storing the trailer inside? Not to worry as we have a 110 to 12v inverter wired in as well, that way you can plug the trailer in and let it charge while it sits.

Fit and Finish. This customer opted to have the frame and boxes painted instead of powdercoated, due to the ease of touching up the paint over time. All of the brackets and mounts on the inside of the boxes we powdercoated to match the compressor and hose reel. They also decided to add a little flair and go with a set of Raceline Wheels. Even though everything was getting painted, we decided to add an extra layer of protection to the front side of the trailer. We designed and made an aluminum diamond plate cap that slips over the front of the trailer. To tie it in nicely we also did aluminum trim plates down the bottom of the tapered section on the front box.

“Kustomization.” While everything we laid out above is what we did for this customer, these trailers are a blank canvas and can be setup and designed for whatever you can come up with. The Boxes, Fuel Tank, Storage, Doors, Accessories, Lighting, and anything else you may think of can be added, subtracted, or altered to accommodate the exact setup that you are looking for!
